Candidate filing period begins Monday

Political candidates of both parties  were in line this (Monday) morning to begin the process of filing petitions for the 2022 election.  The State Board of Elections was a popular place as candidates were in line at 8 am.  Candidates for state and federal offices were securing their positions on the June 28 primary ballot.  A lottery will determine how the  candidates will line up on the ballots. The lottery drawing is March 23. The filing period also began at local county offices and will continue until 5 pm next Monday, March 14.

According to the State Board of Elections, 482 candidates were in line at 8 a.m. All of those were processed by just after 11:30 a.m.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton were among the first to submit their petitions.

State Sen. Darren Bailey, R-Xenia; Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin; and businessman Gary Rabine and former state Sen. Paul Schimpf, all Republican candidates for governor, were also among those who filed early. Venture capitalist Jesse Sullivan, who is also a declared candidate, had not filed as of 2 p.m.
