Authorities in White County, IN report a weekend accident left one person dead and injured three others when a chair-lift malfunctioned. A private chair-lift collapsed and fell down a steep embankment into Lake Freeman.
The White County Sheriff's Office stated the preliminary investigation indicates that the lift device began to accelerate rapidly downward toward the lake for an unknown reason. The sheriff's office said the lift eventually came to rest at the bottom of the hill and crashed into a boat dock.
The lift was carrying four people.
54-year-old Angela Elder of Lafayette was pronounced dead at the scene. Three others, one from Lafayette and two from Monticello were critically injured and taken to area hospitals.
Several first responders were at the scene. The matter is under investigation.
