Champaign Police Officer and suspect dead after domestic shooting

A 13-year-old veteran of the Champaign Police Department was killed early today (Wednesday) in the exchange of gunfire with a suspect at a Champaign apartment complex. 44-year-old Christopher Oberheim died of injuries at Carle Hospital in Urbana.  Another un-dentified officer was injured.  The gunman was also killed.  He died at the scene.

The law enforcement community is mourning the death of the officer.  A parade of squad cars and emergency vehicles escorted the body of the officer to the Champaign County Coroner's Office.  An autopsy on officer Oberheim and the gunman will be held Thursday, according to Coroner Duane Northrup.

The gunman was identified as 24-year-old  Darion M. Lafayette of Champaign.  Police said Lafayette had a history with law enforcement.

The officers responded to a domestic call to the Town Center Apartment Complex.  Police reported the gunman opened fire on the officers.  Police returned fire killing Lafayette.

Champaign Police Chief Anthony Cobb confirmed the death of the veteran officer.  The Champaign Police Department exressesits deepest condolences to Officer Oberheim's family, friends and loved ones.  Chief Cobb also expresses his care and support for all members of the department who are mounring the loss of their friend and colleague.
