The Kankakee County Coroner’s Office is investigating the drowning death of a six-year-old child (Tuesday) in the Kankakee River. It’s been reported the child was with other children playing on a boat dock near the Kankakee Boat Club. The six-year-old’s identity has not been disclosed. Emergency officials reported they responded when learning the child had gone into the river to retrieve a ball. That was around 3 pm. Nearby adults were unable to reach the victim.
Dive teams from MABAS Division 15 were able to retrieve the body, once it was located with a sonar system off the north river bank.
It’s the second drowning in the Kankakee River in the last month. The body of 58-year-old Riger Brooks of Kankakee was located in the river June 15 when he fell from a fishing boat. He was found not far from where this 6-year-old was found.
