Christians across the world are celebrating Ash Wednesday today, the start of Lenten season. For the next 40 days, leading up to Easter Sunday, observers of Lent will fast and may abstain from certain foods, particularly meat. Some may abstain from certain activities.
The ash many churchgoers wear today on their forehead is a testament to their belief in the Resurrection, and paradoxically, in their own mortality.
Many parishioners today will reflect on the Book of Genesis: "For dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return."
