Congressman Kinzinger announces he won't seen another term

Illinois Congressman Adam Kinzinger announced today (Friday) he won't seek re-election when his term expires.  The Republican from Channahon has long been an outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump.  Kinziner has served the 16th Congressional District, which includes Iroquois County.

In a video posted Friday, Kinzinger says he's always been prepared to move on from Congress.  The 'time is now" he said.  He says he's not going away; his political career is not over.  He insists his passion for the country has grown.  His desire to make a difference is bigger than it's ever been.

Kinzinger has been criticized by fellow Republicans over his vote to impeach the former president for his role the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol and Kinzinger's support of a commission to investigate the attack. Kinzinger is serving on that commission.  Kinzinger says the government is not living up to its mission and that not enough people are trying to fix it. He also says divisiveness and anger are fueling politics today.

In the announcement Friday, Kinzinger did not speculate on his political future, but in the past has not ruled out a run for statewide office. The timing of Kinzinger's announcement is shortly after Illinois Democrats proposed a new Congressional map that could make it harder for Republicans to get elected in Illinois. After the announcement of the proposed maps Kinzinger said he was looking over his options including those outside the U.S. House.

Kinzinger has served six terms in Congress. Following the events of January 6th, Kinzinger started his County First PAC focused on finding common ground and ending political divisiveness.
