Corn Maze visitors evacuated due to field fire

A large field fire in Newton County, Indiana Saturday forced patrons at corn maze to evacuate.  No injury was reported but several area fire departments respnded to bring the spreading flames under control.  High winds contributed to the fire in the standing corn field.

Brook-Iroquois Township firefighters were dispatched to State Road 16 just east of US 41.  Brook fire chief Kyle D. Conrad reported windy and dry conditions caused the fire to spread rapidly and into a standing corn field to the north of the field of origin. The fire spread to county road 800S, which is a mile from the point of origin, and into the Kindig Corn Maze on county road 825S.  Patrons of the corn maze had to be evacuated. Fourteen Brook firefighters were assisted with departments from Kentland, Morocco, Goodland, Earl Park, and Sheldon, Illinois. Four tractors and discs from land owners and neighbors also assisted in helping stop the spread of the fire any further. Brook firefighters were on the scene for two hours. Damage estimates were not available and the cause remains under investigation.
