New rules are now in place which change the way flood insurance is priced for Illinoisans and the rest of the country. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has unveiled Risk Rating 2.0, which transforms the National Flood Insurance Program by bringing more equitable pricing to flood insurance. The new rules will affect some Illinois homeowners, especially if they live on a river.
With miles of waterfront in Illinois, including the Mississippi and Illinois rivers, over 37-thousand homeowners could be affected in the state. Last year, the National Flood Insurance Program paid out nearly $578-million dollars in Illinois.
