Danville fire kills one at group home for veterans

Officials in Vermilion County are investigating a Thursday fire that killed one person in a group home arranged for veterans. There’s been no word on a cause for the fire that was first reported about 11:45 am, according to Danville Police.

Public Safety Director Larry Thomason said the Coroner's Office has not yet released the identity of the man whose body was found in the bathroom as firefighters were battling a blaze on Park Street.

Coroner Jane McFadden reports the family of the victim is yet to be located.

When firefighters arrived at the single-family structure that's been divided into multiple residences for veterans, they found an individual in an enclosed front porch. Firefighters got the man clear of the house. It was their understanding that there was no one else inside.

After attacking the flames and heavy smoke coming from the house, they eventually made their way inside where they discovered the man's body in the bathroom.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office is still investigating the cause of the blaze.

The house was divided to accommodate up to five veterans.
