Danville plant layoff costing 180 jobs

FreightCar Inc., a Danville railroad car manufacturer is announcing it will be cutting 180 jobs from its operation. According to the recent Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) report, the company will carry out the layoffs in February.

FreightCar Inc. also has plants in Muscle Shoals, Ala., and Roanoke, Va.

The workers will not be called back, according to the WARN report.

FreightCar has owned and operated the Danville location since 1995. The company's unionized workforce has been as high as 500, according to Vermilion County officials. In recent years the company's workforce has been in the 200 to 250 range.

FreightCar Inc. brought back more than 100 workers to the Danville location with promises of work and being able to retire from the plant. However, two years later, the large staff reduction was announced.
