A man was killed trying to beat a train across the tracks Friday in Danville.

25-year-old Dennis Washington of Danville died after driving his car in front of an oncoming train. It happened around 2 pm on West Newell Road.

The Vermillion County Sheriff's Office says Washington drove around the crossing gates and onto the tracks. He was found dead at the scene.

Witnesses told the gates were down, and several witnesses heard the train sounding its horn. That's when Washington continued to drive around the gates and was struck by the freight train.

Nobody else was hurt.
