The Dwight Village Board has put off until next month a vote on a proposed ICE detention facility. Any vote would be for annexation of an 88-acre tract of land at the border of the village limits.
Mayor Jared Anderson reports a vote on the matter will be part of the March 11 agenda. The delay was requested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The agency has expressed interest in locating a detention facility near Chicago. The 88-acre site near Route 17 and I-55 in Livingston County has been eyed. There’s no guarantee the Dwight site has been chosen.
The Virginia-based Immigration Centers of America is scouting areas where men awaiting immigration hearings would be housed while waiting on visa status determination.
