Effort to relieve ice jams on Kankakee River

Officials are using a unique method to try to alleviate ice jams on the Kankakee River. Residents in Wilmington who live near the river are under a flash flood warning because of the ice jams. Will County’s Emergency Management Agency is using water from a cooling lake at the Dresden Generating Station to help melt the ice on the river. Water used to cool down the nuclear power plant is warm enough to help cut through the ice jams, but officials said it may take awhile to get things flowing again.
