Election referendum: Unity for Our Community

Voters in the Watseka Unit 9 school district are casting ballots for the April 6th Consolidated Election. The Unity for Our Community platform seeks a YES vote that would couple a $17-million tax leverage with a maybe once-in-a-lifetime $50-mil grant that builds for the future.  Local citizens Kerry Bell and John Anderson say why now’s the time…

"The grant situation," Bell tells WGFA listeners, "may never be available again; we don't know that but why chance it."  Bell said there's also the $17-million we would have to borrow anyway for building improvements comes when interest rates are historically low.  We're in a position, he said, to borrow plus at a low rate "-- for work we have to do anyway.

Anderson points out, "school bonds always provide a higher rate oF investment.  That's better for the whole community, so this is such a win-win for the community.  I believe this would be such a plus for the community."

Anderson also said the district is able to piggy-back its local leverage with the $50-million grant resulting in a new school outside the flood zone.
