There were several communities in the WGFA-listening area that approved electric aggregation programs. But others, including Watseka voters, defeated the referendum question.

Watseka voters said No….500 voting against it while 392 voted in favor. It was a 56 to 44% margin against.

Clifton and Gilman voted in favor. The Clifton voters gave it a thumbs up, 51 – 49%. Gilman voters approved the measure 316 to 156, a 66% to 33% margin.

Approving the question in Tuesday’s election were Fairbury, Gridley, Pontiac, Clinton and Bloomington, and unincorporated Woodford County. The question failed in Streator and unincorporated areas of DeWitt, McLean, Woodford and LaSalle counties.

It passed in the city of Bloomington by a vote of 4,517 to 3,888. In McLean County, the measure failed, 1,515 to 1,222.

The program allows municipalities to bundle Ameren customers’ electricity needs to attract the lowest-bidding supplier. Where approved, customers may opt-out if they wish, but otherwise they are automatically enrolled.

Proponents said aggregation would save customers money on their electric bills. Opponents considered the measure an unnecessary government intrusion.
