Escape the Cold: Warming Centers open their doors

The extreme, bitter cold temperatures aren't kind to anyone.  But the elements also can be a burden to those without the warmth of their homes.  Community leaders step up to offer Community Warming Centers for those who need relief.  Surrounding county leaders are informing the public about facilities where people can get out of the cold.

River Valley Metro buses are offered as warming centers.  RVM officials say buses along the fixed-routes offer free rides.  People can board the bus to escape the cold whenever temps are below freezing and pose health risks.

Area governmental leaders also reach out to agencies to help.  Churches, social clubs, government offices, fire departments and schools are sites where people can gather to get out of the cold.

Ford County Emergency Management  Agency (EMA) has six communities willing to help. The Paxton Emergency Response Service Station is available.  In Gibson City, the Public Library and Gibson City Hall offer hours during the business day, Gibson City Fire and Gibson Bible Church can be reached for help.  The Melvin Community Center, Roberts Gym, Piper City Community Center, and Kempton American Legion and Kempton Fire will also open their doors to those in need.

Vermilion County EMA has Warming Centers at CRIS Healthy Aging Center on N. Franklin in Danville and at VFW on Pine Street in Danville.  The First Presbyterian Church-Dwelling Place- on N. Franklin is also listed as a Warming Center.

Shelters are listed at the Rescue Mission Homeless Shelter for Men (accepting men, women and children) at Bowman Avenue.  A shetler is also at Dayspring Women & Children's Homeless Shelter on N. Bowman Avenue.

The St. Anne Civic Community Center is open Friday and during the cold weather.  Other churches in Kankakee County offer assistance and the Homeless Center.  Contact the County EMA for help.

Livingston County has a Warming Center at the Pontiac High School Rec Center.  The EMA officials have a listing of alternative sites.
