Much of Illinois faces extreme heat levels for the next couple of days. The National Weather Service says today's forecast will involve temperatures in the mid-90s with heat indexes of more than 100. Tuesday is likely to bring even more dangerous weather, high near 97 with a heat index near 111. An excessive heat warning has been issued through tomorrow night. Chicago has opened six cooling centers and residents can also escape the heat at several hundred other facilities, including public libraries and city colleges. Health officials urge citizens to stay inside as much as possible.
Local community leaders are urged to make sure cooling centers are available. The St. Anne Civic Center is making its facility available for those who need to escape from the heat. Local Emergency Management Agency officials are also coordinating efforts to get cooling centers open.
