Fairbury: Homecoming threat under investigation

A homecoming issue at the Prairie Central High School remains under investigation. Authorities say charges are likely.

Fairbury Police report a suspect has been identified concerning a false 9-1-1 call about an active shooter at last Saturday’s Homecoming event. The incident did not happen. Police say such pranks will not be tolerated. Parents are reminded to talk to students about consequences.

Fairbury Police responded to the High School about 10:20 pm Saturday, September 24 about an active shooter with two fatalities at the school’s homecoming event. Officers learned the report was false.

An investigation revealed a male suspect had falsely reported serious threats to emergency communication centers across the country. Numerous police agencies are investigating and federal charges will result.

Fairbury Police say due to the multi-agency investigation, the suspect’s identity will not be released, but add that the suspect is not local.

Prairie Central School District Superintendent Paula Crane commented saying, a student made inappropriate comments to friends… “the student claimed he was responsible in a seemingly threatening manner.” After an investigation, it was found the student was joking. That student will pay the consequences.
