Fatal I-57 crash closes interstate for four hours

KANKAKEE -- Two semis collided on I-57 late Saturday morning, killing one of the drivers.

Illinois State Police report 22-year-old Stefan Deranja of Chicago was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, 55-year-old Russell Dickelman of Wisconsin, was treated for minor injuries at Riverside Hospital.

State Police reported the interstate was back open after the southbound lanes were closed for four hours.

Police reported Deranja was northbound at 11:16 am when his freightliner ran off the roadway, thru the median, and back onto the southbound lanes. His rig then ran into the Dickelman unit which was southbound.

Kankakee County Sheriff's Police, Kankakee County Coroner, Kankakee City Police, Kankakee Fire, Riverside Ambulance, and Beaupre's Towing assisted at the scene.
