The Town Mall strip in Rensselaer was gutted by fire in a weekend tragedy that’s left a huge hole in the business community. Sunday’s fire broke out about noon. Several area fire departments answered the call on West Kellner Blvd.
Fire crews and other emergency responders evacuated an approximate two-block area. No injuries were reported. The shopping center was vacant at the time.

Witnesses reported the buildings that made up the strip mall were very old. Remodeling efforts in recent years included a new roof.
