The Illinois House approved a ban on privately-funded civil detention centers before one could be built in central Illinois. The state had previously banned for-profit prisons, but not civil detention centers.

The bill passed with bipartisan support and now needs Senate consideration before it could be signed into law by the governor. A detention center was approved in Dwight by local officials.
