Ford County jail inmate found hanging in cell

A Ford County jail inmate was in critical condition Monday at an Urbana hospital several hours after he was found hanging by the neck from a bed sheet in his cell.

Sheriff mark Doran stated in a news release, a correctional officer, while making a routine cell check at 10:28 a.m., found the unresponsive inmate, whose identity has not been released.

The officer was able to get the inmate down and CPR was immediately started by Ford County jail staff. Paramedics from Gibson Area Ambulance and a member of the Paxton Fire Department transported the inmate to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

The sheriff has called in the Illinois State Police to investigate the incident. The sheriff's office declined to disclose any further details.
