Ford County kick-off meeting addresses future natural disasters

First of a series of meetings to create Hazard Mitigation Plan

A list of 18+ agencies/organizations were represented at Ford County’s Hazard Mitigation Planning meeting April 9 at Roberts. A committee will work with the American Environmental Company (Springfield) to create a mitigation plan for responding to natural disasters. The goal is to manage the effects of storms, flooding, tornadoes and other disasters that lead to needed resources.

The Emergency Management Agency (EMA) office is assisted by FEMA in funding the effort.

“The Plan will identify the natural hazard events that have taken place in the County. The Plan also will list activities and projects that can reduce the risk to residents and damages to property and infrastructure,” according to Ford County EMA Coordinator Terry Whitebird. “Once the Plan is finalized, the County and participating jurisdictions will become eligible for federal funding for these projects.”

Stakeholders involved include County, Municipal, Township, School Districts, Fire Protection Districts, Police Agencies, Health and Transportation Offices … to name a few. The public is encouraged to attend and participate in the meetings.

A second follow-up meeting is scheduled for 6 pm Tuesday, July 16 at the Roberts Gym.
