A ruling in U.S. Federal Court in Urbana reveals a multi-million dollar settlement has been reached in a 2013 federal suit against Ford County. The Ford County Record reports the sheriff, two correctional officers and the County were named in the suit.
The seven-count lawsuit was on behalf of the estate of Richard Gonzalez. He was a Hoopeston man jailed for theft. The suit claimed jail personnel failed to provide proper medical care for the inmate. Gonzalez was found dead in his cell about 4 am. The case was about Gonzalez not receiving proper medical treatment for “serious medical needs.” The exact amount of the settlement was not disclosed, according to the Record.
