Emergency responders answered call just before 8 am Friday

Indiana State Police took the lead in the investigation of a fatal fire Friday morning in Fowler, IN. The State Fire Marshall’s Office is also investigating. Police reported one man died in the morning house fire. The Fowler Police Department was first called to the scene at 5th Street and Polk Avenue to investigate. State Police investigators were asked to step in. after a volunteer firefighter driving by saw it on fire. Fire Chief Bill Burton reported a volunteer firemen came across the fire and tried to get inside, but the flames were too intense.

State Police Sgt. Kim Riley said crime scene techs are gathering information.

They also had a search dog sniffing around the inside and outside of the home. Chief Burton said it is suspicious, but couldn't elaborate as to why. A police dog was sniffing the premises as part of the investigation. Officials were working to identify the man killed. The man was the only person inside the home at the time of the fire. No word whether it’s a homicide case.

Benton County Coroner, Matt Rosenbarger said an autopsy is scheduled for Saturday.
