Fraud: Scam artists at work

While the busy holiday rush continues, consumers are warned to be wary of scam activity. Phony money and fraudulent phone solicitors are busy again. Shoppers are also advised to pay attention to your surroundings.

Counterfeit $20 bills have surfaced at some retail outlets. Reports have been completed in Iroquois, Vermilion counties and in west-central Indiana. A counterfeit $20 bill was passed at a restaurant in Hoopeston.

The Illinois Sheriff’s Association also recently issued notice to consumers that a phone campaign has been fraudulently using the name “Disabled Police and Sheriffs Foundation” to solicit donations. The Illinois Sheriff’s Association never solicits by phone. The association does use a direct-mail campaign but never uses phone calls to solicit money.

Consumers are advised to be familiar with who you donate to, especially during the holiday season. If you’re unsure who you’re dealing with, Just Hang Up.
