The 29-year-old Milford man accused of throwing a hatchet at an Iroquois County Sheriff’s deputy (last month) pleaded “not guilty” to felony charges, including attempted murder.

Kevin Funk entered his plea Friday before Judge James Kinzer in Iroquois Circuit Court. Funk faces indictment for attempted murder, aggravated battery to a police officer, and in a separate case, 3-counts of predatory criminal sexual assault and 3-counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

The alleged attack on the officer took place August 26. Funk was indicted by the grand jury September 7.

It was sheriff deputy Clint Perzee who suffered a broken arm, dislocated finger and had to be stitched up for a severe arm laceration. The deputy was hit by a tomahawk, police said, was thrown at him by Funk while police were in the process of arresting Funk for the alleged criminal sexual assault of a child.

The incident took place at Funk’s rural Milford residence. Deputy Perzee raised his left arm to protect his head when he was struck by the tomahawk, according to the police report. The deputy underwent surgery at IMH and has since returned to work.

Funk remains jailed on a $500,000 bond.
