Brook-Iroquois Township and Kentland-Jefferson Township firefighters were alerted to a residential structure fire Monday morning shortly after 8am. No one was injured at 150 South Home Street in Brook. Brook Fire Chief Kyle Conrad reported the home's tenant noticed smoke in his attached garage as he was leaving for work and called 911.
A Newton County Sheriff's Deputy, who is also a Brook firefighter, arrived on scene within minutes and was able to knock the fire down with a garden hose until fire units arrived. The fire was brought under control within minutes and overhaul was completed within the hour. A heating unit is believed to be the cause of the fire. Damage was contained to the garage and its contents.
