(Springfield, IL) -- The next Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court is likely to be Justice Rita Garman of Danville. The court's press secretary Joseph Tybor says the announcement on who will succeed Thomas Kilbride when his term ends in October could come next week when the court meets in Chicago. (Justice Kilbride is a Kankakee native).
Tybor says the position of chief justice usually rotates among the justices, based on seniority, and by that standard, Garman would be next in line. Garman was named to the state's highest court in February 2001, becoming the second woman to serve on the Supreme Court and the first from downstate.
