The Gibson City school district is mourning the loss of a GCMS High School junior who was killed in a two-vehicle collision early Saturday morning.
17-year-old Dylan T. Benningfield died in a head-on crash north of Gibson City. His younger brother, Logan, was airlifted to an Urbana hospital. His condition improved over the weekend.
The GCMS school district will make counselors available this week. Support personnel will be available as long as needed, according to the school website.
The Coroner’s office and police report the accident happened about 6:45 am Ford County Road 900 North, about a quarter-mile west of Illinois 47. The victim was driving east on 900 North when it collided head-on with a westbound fertilizer truck. Logan Benningfield was a passenger in the car.
The deputy coroner Lindsay Dilks pronounced Dylan Benningfield dead at about 8:35 am. An autopsy is to be conducted (Monday) to confirm the cause of death, Dilks said.
District 21 Illinois State Police were investigating the cause of the accident.
