Governor Pence talks agriculture in Benton County, IN >

Indiana Governor Mike Pence talked about the impact of agriculture on the Hoosier economy Thursday. The governor was in Benton County at Buchanan Farm.

Pence met with members of the community talking about a broad range of topics. A question and answer session took direct focus on the impact of agriculture on the state's economy.

There was concern expressed about the need to lower property taxes on farmland. It was pointed out taxes have more than doubled in the last 10 years and it appears the numbers are going even higher.

One farmer pointed to where you could have up to $70 per acre in some communities, which typically out-paces most classified and zoned properties in the state of Indiana.
Pence responded saying he supports easing tax burdens for farmers and understands the concerns.

It was pointed out during discussion of the income tax formula, as it applies to agriculture and the appreciation in farmland values, the income formula has been outpaced by the land appreciation.
