Greater Kankakee Airport in line for $400,000 in improvements

Pending Congressional approval, The Greater Kankakee Airport will see nearly $400,000 in improvements. The airport authority is waiting on Congressional approval of a $42 million appropriation to move two Illinois National Guard units from Midway Airport in Chicago to Kankakee.

Apron and taxi-way improvements at Kankakee Airport will be completed by a local company, Kankakee Valley Construction Co., of Kankakee.

The National Guard's plan to move air training units from Midway to Greater Kankakee Airport involves a 50-year lease of 30 acres on the west side of the airport property and construction of training facilities.

The move is expected to bring 70 full-time jobs, mainly military, and 200 guard members in training programs.
