Community leaders are urged to open cooling centers today (Thursday) and Friday as temperatures are expected to reach the low to md 90s. And the heat index could climb to 103.
Government buildings, churches, American Legion Homes could serve as local cooling centers. Citizens lacking air-conditioning are encouraged to seek places where they can escape from the heat.
In Paxton, the Emergency Response Services Center at 134 W. State Street, will be open as a cooling center Thursday and Friday from 12 Noon ‘til 6 pm. Officials say water will be available.
The National Weather Service reports heat and humidity will rise through Friday. The heat index will pose the threat of heat-related illnesses. Heat index values both days could to 102 degrees (Thursday) 105 on Friday.

Suggested precautions include limiting exposure to the heat. Postpone outdoor activity until temps cool down and drink plenty of water, even when you’re not thirsty.
The humid weather conditions also bring on the threat of scattered thunderstorms.
