A Herscher Church bus, with 18 passengers, went up in flames early Saturday while enroute in northwest Indiana. The passengers escaped before the flames engulfed the bus. No injuries were reported.
The bus, owned by Herscher Christian Church, was southbound on I-65 near the Lowell exit when the driver noticed sparks coming from the right rear tire. The driver managed to pull the bus to the shoulder and the passengers evacuated before the vehicle was engulfed.
Indiana State Police said the incident happened just before 1 am. Another bus was brought in to transfer the passengers.
Southbound I-65 lanes in this area were closed for approximately two hours for extinguishing the fire, clean-up, and removal of the bus.
