HOMELESS MORTALITY REPORT

The latest homeless morbidity and mortality report from the Illinois Department of Public Health shows that persons experiencing homelessness are much more likely to face emergency department visits, hospitalizations and premature death than the public at large. Nearly 3,000 deaths involving homeless people were reported in Illinois from 2017 to 2025, with an average age of death nearly 20 years younger than the general population. The number of homeless people who died from drug-related overdoses was 39%, compared to less than 5% in the general public.
