Human remains found in Middle Fork River prompts search

Champaign and Ford County authorities are teaming up to investigate the discovery of human remains found near the counties border, in northeast Champaign County.

A human skull and at least one human bone were found by visitors in the Middle Fork Forest Preserve. Champaign County Sheriff Dan Walsh issued a press release stating a skull and bone were found in the river earlier this month. Additional bones were found since then by authorities from his office, the coroner's office and the Ford County Sheriff's Office. A search covered about seven miles of the Middle Fork River and its banks.

Walsh said the skeletal remains are being examined by a forensic anthropologist, and later DNA will be forwarded to the state police crime lab.

Walsh said it's hard to say at this point if the skeletal remains could belong to a missing person or a victim of foul play.
