The traffic flow on I-55 is moving again in South-Central Illinois following Monday’s multi-car pile-up that claimed six lives and injured up to 30 others. The north and southbound lanes of the interstate re-opened at 6 am.
ISP reported Monday it was a wind-blown dirt storm that reduced visibility to zero. Several vehicles were involved in chain-reaction crashes.
ISP Director Brendan Kelly urges drivers to be aware of road conditions, slow down and drive safe and be aware of the weather. Kelly said “when conditions change, you have to change on how you drive. “ ISP said they have identified one person who died as 88-year-old Shirley Harper of Franklin, WI.
ISP is investigating the crash, but they are not sure if they are pressing any criminal charges.
