i-65 Crash Seriously Injures Two

Lane closure and backed-up traffic on I-65 in Jasper County, IN Monday morning. State Police reported a semi hauling liquid sugar rolled after driving into the median at 1:30 am. The driver refused medical attention. Police reported the left lane was closed while crews cleared the scene. And – traffic was backed up. Traffic was diverted off the interstate at SR 10.

Then a second crash occurred at 5:45 am in the backup. State Police at Lowell reported the driver of a box-truck failed to realize the traffic back-up. The truck driver rear-ended a car stopped in the right lane, pushing it into another car and a Peterbilt tractor-trailer. Catastrophic damage was reported to the two cars with serious injuries.

A four-year-old boy property secured in a car seat was taken to a Crown Point Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was later transferred to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago. The child’s parents were also injured.

This crash remains under investigation. Once that investigation has been completed, the findings will be turned over to the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office for consideration of charges.
