IDOT advises caution; roads being cleared

Illinois transportation officials issued advisories Sunday asking motorists to remain cautious on the state's roads. Lingering snow and ice on some of the state's roadways was still causing some accidents.

IDOT reported conditions are improving on roads and bridges across the state, but problem areas remain.

Local state and county snowplow operators were saying ice and snow patches remain scattered with some areas in central and southern Illinois still covered with snow and ice. They caution, areas that appear clear are still slick from refreezing. And road conditions could become dangerous once temperatures drop.

The Illinois Tollway spent Sunday removing snow from roadway shoulders, ramps and toll plazas after clearing the roads.

Officials say tollway crews and State Police helped more than 75 motorists since Friday night with such things as flat tires, dead batteries and towing cars.
