Illinois addresses traffic safety, want 'zero deaths'

Nearly 1,100 people died on Illinois roads last year, the eighth-highest total in the country and a 2 percent increase. The trend nationally is going down. To investigate how other states are working to control the rates, Illinois Department of Transportation held a summit Tuesday in Springfield.

Minnesota state traffic safety engineer Brad Estochen recommended ways to slow traffic down in troubled spots.

Other Minnesota officials talked about bringing transportation, law enforcement and public health officials together.

Illinois State Police Sgt. Mike Kindhart said such an effort can be effective.
