Nearly one-in-three people in America are expected to travel between now and New Year's. In Illinois, that number is closer to one-in-two.
Almost six million people from Illinois are expected to travel somewhere this holiday season.
That's in-line with the record-breaking travel expectations across the rest of the country, AAA Chicago Motor Club's Beth Mosher said.
Mosher said in Illinois, almost all of the people who are traveling will drive.
"Here in Illinois we're expecting to see about 5.8 million people traveling," Mosher said. "Of that 5.8 million, we're expecting to see 5.3 million of them taking a road trip here in Illinois."
Mosher said about 300,000 people will fly.
For those who are driving, Mosher encouraged them to remember a designated driver for parties and a designated texter for the road trip.
"We're urging people to buckle up and leave all distractions to the passenger. We're calling them a designated texter," Mosher said. "The driver needs to focus on the task at hand. Which is getting from here to there safely."
Mosher said a strong economy is helping drive the record-setting travel, though she said low gas prices don't hurt either.
Nationally, more than 112 million people – one-third of the country – are expected to travel between now and New Year's.
