Illinois: New state solar law protects farmland

A new Illinois law, signed recently by Governor Bruce Rauner, sets rules for setting up and taking down solar panels to make sure they don't harm farm land.

It requires developers to pay to restore land if and when the solar panels are taken down.

Concern has been raised by landowners and others about the solar panels disrupting prime farmland in Illinois. Any damage to farm ground is reason people have been against a 120—acre solar operation near Sidney in Champaign County.

There’s also opposition for a proposed development near Momence in Kankakee County.

Solar farm proposals are on county board agendas in central Illinois.
