Improper Passing was Cause of Crash

A collision between a pickup truck and a semi near Grant Park closed a section of Illinois Route 1 for a while Friday morning. Illinois State Police investigated at the Kankakee-Will County line just before 9 am. One of the drivers was ticketed for Improper Passing and Failure to Reduce Speed.

Police reported Jose Menchaca (Men-cock-uh) of Chicago was operating a Mack semi southbound and attempted to pass a southbound pickup that making a turn onto County Road 12000 N. The collision pushed the pickup into a ditch. The pickup driver, 44-year-old Refugio Castaneda of Grant Park, was not injured. The semi lost control and overturned. Driver Menchaca was treated for a minor injury. He was also cited by state police.

Grant Park Fire, Kankakee County Sheriff’s Police, and the Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.
