The Illinois Department of Employment Security reports the state's unemployment rate is down. The January 2023 rate was at 4.5 percent. In 2022, the rate was at 4.8 percent. The December 2022 rate was at 4.6 percent. The national rate in January this year was at 3.4 percent.
Industry sectors with the most job gains include government, leisure and hospitality, and educational and health services. The industries with the biggest job losses were information, professional and business services, trade, transportation and utilities, and other services.
The number of people looking for work who couldn't find it was at 294,300.
