Newton County was the scene for yet another traffic safety blitz on U.S. 41 and on I-65.  The Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED), along with the Newton County Sheriff's Office, conducted another traffic enforcement blitz, the third traffic blitz in the last five months that was focused on commercial vehicle enforcement. The officers were primarily focused on trucks traveling on U.S. 41 and I-65 due to continued complaints of overweight trucks. The blitz shifted to I-65 when officers were alerted that trucks were changing their route due to the presence of law enforcement on U.S. 41.

This blitz resulted in 12 truck inspections, 3 traffic citations and 9 warnings. Of the 12 inspections conducted, there were 22 violations noted on those inspections. Of the 12 trucks that were weighed, 6 of them were overweight in some form. One driver was placed out of service for not wearing required glasses while driving and one truck was put out of service for being overweight on one axle.

Sgt. Dale Turner from the Indiana State Police CVED stated, “This is the third blitz conducted in conjunction with the Newton County Sheriff’s Department. Voluntary compliance with commercial motor vehicle regulations is the goal of these enforcement efforts. Additional patrol blitzes are planned, so drivers of commercial motor vehicles in Indiana should take notice of these efforts. We aren’t going away.”
