Indictment error presents confusion in theft case

Iroquois County case to be reviewed

The legal minds involved in a village-government theft case will be back in court next month (December 2) to iron out paper work that's caused confusion in the case.

This involves theft charges facing a former bookkeeper/collector for the village of Cissna Park.
Rhonda Sue Siebert was in Iroquois County Circuit Court Thursday with intent to plead guilty to a Class 1 felony listed in a grand jury indictment. The indictment charges her with the theft of between $100,000 and $500,000 in village funds.

State's Attorney Jim Devine told the court the charge should have been a more serious Class X felony. Siebert then withdrew her plea.

The 2012 indictment was supposed to be listed as a felony but the mistake. Devine points out, was listed as a Class 1 offense.

The theft of government funds as reported earlier exceeded $100,000.

The indictment paper work will have to be amended.
