Iroquois County Board limits public comments

At least six members didn't like it, but the Iroquois County Board voted (Tuesday) to restrict public comments at its meetings. The proposal was drawn up months ago by the Board's policy & procedure committee, reviewed and finally voted on by the membership.

The approved-restrictions for public comments has a 5-minute limit per person. The chairman has the discretion to grant additional time - - within reasonable time limits.

Thirty minutes, all told, will be set aside for public comment at the start of a meeting.

The now-approved policy was voted in on a 12-6 vote. The vote came after Board member Vince LaMie made a motion to remove the issue from the policy & procedure minutes to vote on separately. That attempt failed on a 7-11 vote.

Watseka Board member Larry Hasbargen was against it. He said the vote shows membership has lost touch with the public.
