Iroquois County voters will get an opportunity to say Yes or No to a public safety tax in November.

The County Board (Tuesday) voted 11-5 to place a quarter-cent sales tax on the November 8 ballot -- to fund public safety issues.

The motion for a ¼-cent tax question passed after an earlier motion for a ½-cent tax failed in an 8-all vote.

Sheriff Derek Hagen told the board members money generated from the tax would go toward public safety and it’s the discretion of the board to decide how to channel that money for specific use.

Hagen’s comment clarifies questions from concerned board members, who worry how that money is to be used.

The sheriff said the public safety tax is used for public safety alone and does not take money from the general fund for law enforcement.
