Iroquois County fears loss of tax revenue with elimination of 1% grocery tax

The Iroquois County Board (Tuesday) discussed Governor JB Pritzker’ budget proposal to eliminate the Illinois sales tax on groceries statewide. County, cities, and township government could take quite a hit without that local tax revenue.

County Board Chairman John Shure questions where that lost revenue would come from ?  Eliminating the grocery tax could erase upwards of $6 - $800, 000 in revenue at the County level……

"The amount may seem high, but with a 27,000 population and each person maybe consuming $25 worth of groceries in a week's time, that's a loss of some $700,000 in revenue," Shure said.
Chairman Shure also expressed concern about the number of solar company representatives soliciting landowners to host a solar farm on their property ….

"We have lot of companies reaching out to farm property owners to consider a solar farm.  It wouldn't take long to impact the acreage being farmed, Shure said.  "I understand it can be lucrative, but we lose productive land for our products too."

The Board awarded a contract to Martin Developments of Watseka for construction of a County Morgue. It’ll be attached to an existing building behind the County Jail. Some minor construction details are yet to be worked out before work begins.
