Iroquois County narrowly OK’s public safety tax

Just 104 votes separated the Yes and No votes for a public safety sales tax in Iroquois County (Tuesday).

The Yes votes totaled 6,435 to 6,331 No votes. The slim margin of victory was 50.4% to 49.5%.

Twenty-six precincts favored the .25% (quarter-cent) tax that finds all people shopping for certain items in the county paying the tax. It’s not just taxing Iroquois County residents.

The quarter-cent tax exempts certain items. It’s expected to generate a little over $400,000 that will support law enforcement efforts.

Police, fire departments and other emergency responders were in support of the tax.

Precincts that voted against the sales tax included Loda, Artesia, Chebanse 1 & 2, Ashkum 1 & 2, Milks Grove, Martinton, Sheldon 2, Middleport 2, Fountain Creek, Papineau.
